Our on-site clinic meets their health needs, and our Covenant Works program helps them navigate the world of employment. Rights of Passage, our transitional housing program, empowers youth to build the skills they need to live independently. A principal, school district and law enforcement agency would have to agree to let staff carry guns, and then workers who want to carry a handgun would need to have a handgun carry permit and written authorization from the school’s principal and local law enforcement. How Serious Is Youth Homelessness?
Throughout the 1970s, Covenant House continued to grow its social service programs in New York City; by 1980, Covenant House began expanding to other cities in the United States, and eventually Canada and Central America. When a young person from Chad came to our shelter speaking one of the country’s 120 local languages, but neither French nor Arabic, the dominant languages, CHNY turned to Chad’s consulate in New York for help. The dynamic has changed over the ensuing months, as newcomers filter out throughout the city. Today, they arrive from a greater diversity of countries, most notably from African countries. CHNY saw the largest influx of young people from the migrant trail last summer, when southern governors began busing asylum seekers to New York City and other destinations far from the southern U.S. border.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the opening of Covenant House New York’s new $76 million facility that will provide housing and supportive services to youth who are experiencing homelessness and survivors of human trafficking. The new 80,000 square foot facility is the first purpose-built facility in the 50-year history of Covenant House serving young people in New York City.
